Nokia Acquires Plum

Nokia has added another company to its roster, acquiring certain assets of Plum Ventures Inc., to complement Nokia’s Social Location Services. Plum has been known to develop and operate cloud-based social media sharing and messaging service, a perfect complement to this arm of Nokia.

Plum has offices located in Boston and San Francisco which should be a wealthy investment. The acquired Plum assets will become part of Nokia’s Services unit.

  • AT&T halts sales of Nokia Mural

Just earlier this month we notified you of the impending AT&T release for the Nokia Mural. Well, it seems that before the device even got a chance to take off, AT&T is halting all sales.

Unfortunately, this delay is until further notice (which could mean forever) due to the production model of the device unable to work over AT&T’s 3G network. As for the stock that’s already out there, BGR reports that retailers have been ordered to send the phone back to headquarters for a software update.

Those of you discouraged about this news need not be as there are countless 3G clamshell alternatives out there.

  • Nokia 2200 Slide Gets Leaked

With all the excitement around Motorola’s official start in the Android smartphone business we can’t overlook an upcoming Nokia phone. The 2200 has been leaked already and we know it’s going to be an entry-level handset which will bring you simple features like GSM and EDGE connectivity, VGA camera, FM radio, 3.5mm jack and Symbian S40 in the background. The phone will be available in 6 different colors and will cost around $125 but you’ll probably be able to get it for free with new contracts. We have no idea when it’s going to be available but we’ll tell you more once Nokia decides to officially unveil it.

Nokia 5230 Cell Phone Gets FCC Nod

Remember the Nokia 5230 that was announced a few days ago? The phone was recently spotted over at the FCC - that’s right folks, the newest touchscreen phone from Nokia is set to flood the markets. I really wish Nokia stopped using numbers in their model numbers though - it’s just not easy to remember ‘em all. As seen over in that other post, the phone supports handwriting input along with touch, which is useful for quickly noting down information. I’ve never been fond of the touchscreen QWERTY keyboards (at least until now), so that’s one feature that would be mighty useful for me.

Bummer that the phone only has a 2 megapixel camera. But the screen is nice and large (3.2 inch), so that’s good. It’s on schedule for a Q4 2009 release.

  • This was bound to happen sooner or later so we should be happy it happened a lot sooner than expected. Nokia has announced its first LTE Modem. The RD-3 is going to offer support for GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE bands so it will certainly be useful no matter what network you decide to use. We have no idea when and where this first Nokia LTE Internet modem will be available but it’s good to know Nokia is getting ready for the immediate future. Samsung, where’s your LTE modem?

It’s been three months since the Nokia Ovi Store launched, and the mobile provider finally released download numbers on Thursday. Since May 26th, the Ovi Store has only had ten million downloads. Nokia has said that the average user has downloaded six items, resulting in only 1.67 million users using the store. These numbers, in comparison to the App Store’s 100 million downloads in two months, aren’t exactly appealing.

It’s important to note that that sales went up 50% from July to August, so there is still hope for the service. Fortunately, as announced yesterday, Nokia will be releasing developer tools to have more applications made for their store. Additionally, three new languages (Portuguese, French and simplified Chinese) will be supported by the end of the year. Nokia has also bumped their quota up to 500 applications will be approved every week.

    Nokia releases Ovi dev tools

Nokia announced yesterday that they will be launching developer tools for their mobile platform Ovi.

“Our goal is clear, and that is to make it effortless for our partners to create highly appealing, context-relevant applications,” said Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President Services at Nokia.

Applications created by the new developer tools will be released onto the Ovi Store beginning next year.

Nokia’s flagship phone, the N97, might not have been received very well in the USA where no carrier is currently selling it, but it’s certainly a great seller. The phone has already been sold in 2 million units in the past three months around the world. Its big brother, the 5800 XpressMusic has been sold in 10 million units in the last 10 months which means Nokia is on the right track. It’s first touchscreen phones are bringing in money and we’re anxious to see what new smartphones will the Finnish manufacturer launch. The next big hit should be the N900 which seems to be, at least so far, a much better phone than the N97.

What about you? What Nokia phone do you currently own and what Nokia phone would you rather have? After all Nokia is currently the number one mobile manufacturer with an almost 40% worldwide market share. Chances are that you’re currently using a Nokia phone too!

  • What is Nokia up to now that it has launched a bunch of new phones and mobile gadgets? Well it looks like the Finnish manufacturer might be working on a 12.1-megapixel camera phone which should suit the needs of passionate photographers.

Unfortunately the picture you see happens to be a fake and you should not get your hopes up any time soon. A 12.1-megapixel camera is certainly going to be installed on a future Nokia phone but we might still have to wait a long time for that to happen.

On the other hand, considering that this 12.1-megapixel camera phone idea has already emerged on Flickr, we should assume that at least some people are thinking about such a handset. Who’s to say that Nokia isn’t thinking similar thoughts too?

  • Come September 13, a new and different Nokia phone will be hitting the U.S. market courtesy of Verizon Wireless with the expected launch of the Nokia Twist. What started out as rumors is now becoming a reality (similar to most leaks we see online these days) and will retail for $149.99 on a two year deal before rebate.

Some of the features that the Nokia Twist will be having include that of a 3.0 megapixel autofocus camera, a full QWERTY keyboard which can swivel to make the phone to a near-perfect square. The faceplates are also changeable along with other auxiliary features like a full HTML browser and a Habitat Mode Unique Display Theme and a contact light ring for contact and event notifications.

  • Just like we told you a few days ago, Nokia is already offering its brand new Internet Tablet to those of you willing to pay the full price. We’ve seen the N900 up for pre-order in Germany and Italy and now the U.S. Nokia site has the gadget available for pre-order too. In case money is no object to you then you’ll have no problem getting the N900 for $649. That sounds like a lot, sure, but not as much as $860. That’s how much Europeans will have to pay for the same N900 if they decide to pre-order it.

  • A new firmware update for the N97 Mini is coming out soon, and thenokiablog has a video demonstrating some of its features. One of the main focuses of the update is a long-awaited kinetic scrolling update, which has sorely been needed for the N97. Other features include new social networking integration (e.g. Facebook, Twitter), and widgets.

  • Nokia Pulls Out of MWC

You can forget about seeing how Nokia fares in this year’s Mobile World Congress. The telecom giant has announced that Nokia will not take part this year, apparently tightening their belt in the midst of this financial crisis the world economy is in. Actually if you think about it, Nokia may not need to be there at all considering the popularity that they have among the leaders in the telecoms industry.

And while most consumers are sure to be disappointed, other companies like Samsung, LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson are apparently pleased of this development. Why? Well for one, they have lesser worries on competing for attention for their current mobile lineup, something that Nokia has been hogging through the years. If you want to sum it all up for Nokia’s adversaries, the time to shine is now!

  • Not much is known about the Nokia 2705 Shade except for the fact that it will be joining the Verizon ranks as one of many entry-level cellphones later this year, but just know that while it’s no N97, it could be just what you are looking for if you are on the hunt for an affordable, good-looking flip phone in the near future.  The Shade is expected to replace the Nokia Mirage on Verizon when it is released and looking at the similarities between the two feature phones, could we expect the same kind of low-end features that we saw on the Mirage or something better, like an improved camera and some type of social networking support? It looks like at least the camera might see a tiny bump as the Shade 2705 has a dedicated camera key, which could turn out to be pretty useless if it houses any lens that is less than 2 megapixels.  We will be on the lookout for anything else that might pop up on this low-end fella, but take the jump for a couple more pictures until then.

Sure, it’s not as cool as Nokia’s recently announced N97 mini, but it looks like a RAZR and that’s cool enough for me. Anyways, what you see above is the Nokia Mural which was recently announced to be coming to AT&T on September 6th for $49.99 after rebate and a 2-year contract.

This phone will feature a 2.2-inch screen, 3G, external music buttons, 2mp camera, IM and email clients, and a microSDHC slot.

The best feature of all? The fact that you can customize the phone’s lighting, woo!

  • While we’ve seen and heard about the Nokia N97 mini several times before, Nokia has refraned from officially taking the wraps off the device. Today, however, at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Nokia’s Anssi Vanjok has finally made the phone official.

The phone itself features a 3.2-inch touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, social networking integration and built-in Lonely Planet guidebooks, among other things.

Price wise we’re looking at 450 (about $640) but Mr. Vanjok is positive it will be free with a contract in several different markets with it’s made available next month.
