  • Nokia N96 with Silverlight

I was wondering when this would happen, but well, it happened today. Nokia will support Microsoft’s Silverlight platform (a competitor to Adobe’s Flash technology) with a view to deliver rich web applications on the S60 (Symbian OS) series of devices.

You may already know that Flash is available for S60 in the form of Flash Lite, but now Microsoft is aiming for a piece of the pie. Lee Williams, Senior VP for Nokia’s Devices software org claimed “Nokia aims to support market leading and content rich internet application environments and to embrace and encourage open innovation. By working with Microsoft, we are creating terrific opportunities and additional choices for the development community, S60 licensees and the industry as a whole.”

Like Flash, Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in and is used on such websites as NBA.com and NBC Universal. With a mobile phone, the reach will be much higher. For a demo, check out the MIX08 conference on March 5 in Las Vegas. Developers can get their hands on Silverlight for S60 later this year.

  • No-Key%20Nokia%20X-SIM.jpgIf the service you’ve bought with your Nokia cell phones has got you grumpy in light of the recent price drops in various American cell phone networks’ call plans, then the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can help you out. The No-Key Nokia X-SIM can unlock your DCT-4 or BB5 Nokia phone in a jiffy. And we’re not talking about tinkering with your phone such that it voids your warranty. You simply insert the No-Key Nokia X-SIM with the SIM card of the network provider of your choice, and your phone is good to go. This works because based on a locked phone’s mechanism, when you insert another SIM inside the phone, it won’t work because its identification system would indicate that it’s another network provider. However, the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can totally bypass this identification system, allowing you to use any network of your choosing. You can buy the No-Key Nokia X-SIM here for US$31.69.

    Factory testing shows the No-Key Nokia X-SIM to unlock 2630, 5300, 5700, 6120c, 6110 navigator, 6500c, 6500s, N76, N95, N95 8GB, N61 8GB, E65, N73, N80, 6120c, N75, 6300, as well as all DCT4 and BB5 Nokia mobile phones.

  • Nokia Morph: The Nanotech Concept Phone

    Nokia_Morph1.jpg

Nokia Research Center in association with the University of Cambridge has showcased the Nokia Morph, a nanotech concept phone. True to its name, the Nokia Morph is a phone which the developers envisage to be able to morph, depending upon the user’s needs. The Nokia Morph was presented in the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Nokia Morph aims to use flexible materials, have self-cleaning surfaces, and be a transparent electronic device. Believe it or not, this technology is projected to be available within 7 years’ time initially on high-end phone, although subsequent advances in nanotechnology would find a way to make the technology available to the masses.

  • Nokia N-Gage at GDC 2008

    Nokia N-Gage

If you are at the Game Developers Conference 2008 in San Francisco, you might have noticed the increasing efforts going on in the mobile gaming space. With a host of games on the N-Gage platform, Nokia is making its presence felt yet again. Some of the new titles include The Dark Knight, SPEED RACER and Super Slam Ping Pong by Glu Mobile; DChoc Café(TM) Solitaire 12-Pack, DChoc Café(TM) Sudoku and DChoc Café(TM) Hold’ Em Poker by Digital Chocolate and Worms World Party by THQ Wireless.

Nokia Games Publishing will also be bringing us Yamake, Disk Dagger and Fallen Idol, a detective adventure game. Anybody know if Digger (yeah, that classic old PC game) is available for mobile phones - specifically the Nokia S60 series? I’ve been looking for it all over.

The GDC 2008 will be on show tomorrow as well, so you can also catch a series of mobile lectures and case studies by Nokia executives. All the action will be at the North Hall of the Moscone Convention Center.

Nokia has presented a video on their new concept phone, the “Remade.” The idea behind the “Remade” concept is to find out whether it’s actually possible to create an entire phone from 100% recycled materials. This is an effort by Nokia to try and reduce landfills as well as to minimize the need for natural resources. The concept phone was constructed with upcycled plastic bottles and aluminum cans and keypads made of old rubber tires and environmentally friendly technologies such as energy saving graphics. The “Remade” concept is part of Nokia’s endeavor to look at how mobile phones could be made in the future.

  • Pics of the Nokia FOMA NM705i

    Nokia%20FOMA%20NM705ia.jpg

Remember the Nokia FOMA NM705i? We reported about the handset last year; a Nokia model for Japan’s NTT DoCoMo. The press presentation for the handset which was announced last November was only held recently, in spite of the fact that it’s also going to be released this month. The Nokia FOMA NM705i has limited capabilities compared to the other handsets in the series. Nevertheless, the Nokia FOMA NM705i offers a 1.9 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, FM radio tuner, and Japanese-English (and vice versa) dictionary.

The handset on the pic above is the “bitter orange” color, which is the model’s key colorway. Other color themes are “noble white” and “stylish black.” A photo of the three colors after the jump.

The last time Nokia put up a countdown timer on its site, the N82 was born. This time, with the accompanying MWC itinerary revealing nothing, I would wager on the N96, recently leaked by an irked German, and/or the S60 Touch. Either way, I would love to see the unbelievably packed N96 become a reality or even Nokia take on Apple with a far more superior device than the iPhone. But hey, with roughly 30 hours to go, we won’t have to wait too long, do we?

  • NokiaUCB.jpg

About 100 cars equipped with the Nokia 95 and driven by University of California students traveled a 10-mile highway stretch near San Fransisco to demonstrate how real-time traffic stats can be obtained using GPS-enabled cell phones. Conducted by Nokia in association with UC Berkley Research Facility, this experiment was carried out using a special software developed by Nokia to aggregate individual GPS feeds and combine it to create a real-time traffic picture. All data sent was completely anonymous and encrypted, keeping privacy concerns at bay. The special software on the N95s used during the test sent periodical speed and location readings based on the integrated GPS system.

With congestion causing 4.2 billion hours of travel in USA alone, Nokia believes that this very well could be the answer, with only 5% of drivers needing to contribute for the system to work on any given highway. The driver can also opt to turn off their GPS feed if unwilling to share position data from their device. Given the steady increase of cell phones with integrated GPS, this innovative idea cannot entirely be ruled out and could pave the way for a better traveling experience.

  • You really better not cross with the Germans. After the much heated, much publicized outcry in Germany when Nokia closed its plant in the country and laid off 2,300 people, you’d think it’ll all level off when the politicians took to boycotting the mobile phone brand. Well, guess what, it’s far from over. Hostile public smashing of Nokia devices aren’t enough, it seems the web master for the Nokia Germany web site has also leaked the specs for the Nokia N96. During the CES 2008 Convention, people were notified of the release of a hot red version of the popular Nokia N95. In Japan, Softbank customers are also promised a red handset under the name Softbank X02NK. We’re finally seeing the handset in the flesh (or plastic), as the model which scorches you raw as a hot day out having summer barbecue is finally available to US customers. The catch — there’ll only be 5,000 red N95 handsets available for the first quarter of 2008. Eviiiilll! They’ll do anything to get a “limited edition” tag on a handset, won’t they? If you’re interested (as I am), the bright-red Nokia N95 will be available for US$599.

  • Cameraless Nokia E51 Launched

The Nokia E51 was designed with business professionals in mind. This means that Nokia wants to optimize it for the working environment. Knowing that cameras are prohibited in certain workplaces, Nokia opted to strip the camera from the phone altogether. The cameraless Nokia E51 costs around US$360, which is more than what the camera-toting E51 costs. Hey, stripping those cameras off the handsets should cost something right? We reckon we’ll be seeing the price go down soon enough.
