Nokia has long been known as one of the premiere handset makers on Earth with a staggering market share. Today, however, the news is not the same as Nokia has just posted a $834 million quarterly loss, but that’s not all.

The mega handset manufacturer also let us know that their smartphone market share is also down to 35% as compared to 41% in last quarter.

Is this the beginning of the end for Nokia? Perhaps once their N900 hits the market these numbers will be a bit different? Only time could tell.

  • A little while ago we told you that Best Buy is the exclusive retailer of Nokia’s first netbook, the Booklet 3G. At that time no carrier was willing to subsidized the netbook, but all that has changed by now. AT&T is the first carrier that’s going to sell the Nokia Booklet 3G in the USA. The netbook will be available for $299 with a 2-year contract. That’s the cheapest version available with a $60 per month data plan. Other prices will also be available with cheaper monthly data plans and AT&T will also sell the device without a contract for $599. The netbook will be available in just over a week, on October 22, as soon as Windows 7 will be launched. Will you get it?

Only 1,000 units will be available so hurry up and get one if you really want it.

These phones are for a limited time offer only. Prices will vary and interested buyers must avail of T-Mobile voice and data plans to be eligible.

T-Mobile has a brand new project ready for its current and future customers. Dubbed as Project Dark or Project Black, T-Mobile’s new initiative is very secret. That doesn’t mean we don’t have some hot stuff for you. It looks like T-Mobile is getting ready to roll out its very own 21Mbps HSPA network, launch a new $50 Everything Unlimited plan and announce a few hot new phones like the BlackBerry Bold 2 and the Nokia N900. That will all happen at once and T-Mobile should make everything official by the end of October. In the mean time we hear T-Mobile is training the staff for the upcoming changes and the carrier isn’t prepared to confirm anything just yet.

T-Mobile has announced the addition of two new phones that will be added to their selling list, more specifically the Tap and Nokia 3711.

The Nokia 3711 can be considered a normal phone, with one goodie which is the inclusion of GPS with Nokia Maps. It also comes with a 2-megapixel camera, and it should be released in the upcoming weeks.

As for the Tap, it is a touchscreen cellphone available in two colors - berry and blue - and boasts GPS, stereo blutooth, and a 2-megapixel camera as well. Unfortunately there are no exact release dates, and no information about the price.

If you were dying to know how Nokia’s N900 handled the web you can stop because a video has hit the web showing off the handset’s web browser.

This web browser is based on work done by Mozilla and I have to say it handles the web quite will with snappy response times, full Flash support and a control scheme similar to one we’ve all come to know and love with Apple’s iPhone.

Anyways, watch the video and let us know what you think of it in the comments.

It has been tradition for the FCC to take a phone apart so that they can carefully check and scrutinize all internal components before approving them. The latest phone that underwent the knife is the much publicized Nokia X6 which is scheduled to be released by the end of the year. As you can see, it is a far cry from the Nokia X6 which was reported here at mobilewhack last month.

The Nokia X6 features a 3.2” touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera and even a TV out. It comes with 32GB of internal storage and will retail for about $459.

  • Nothing is exactly official right now but it looks like Best Buy appears to be the exclusive reseller of Nokia’s first netbook, the Booklet 3G. The good news is that Best Buy might end up selling it for just $599.99 which is about $200 cheaper than European prices. It’s still more expensive than other netbooks but then again the competition doesn’t have features like Windows 7, SIM-card support or 12-hour batteries does it?

The bad news is that no U.S. carrier seems interested in subsidizing it. You’ll only be able to get it from Nokia USA or Best Buy stores for now. We’ll be back when the Booklet 3G becomes officially available to confirm all these rumors!

  • Nokia is ready to take phone charging to the next level. Naturally that next level seems to be wireless power otherwise there wouldn’t be any point for Nokia to join the Wireless Power Consortium. Other important members are Philips, Sany and Duracell so we’re thinking that wireless charging is going to become more and more popular in the near future. Don’t expect to see Nokia phones ready to charge Palm Pre style right away, but who knows what the future will bring. Here’s what Markku Verkama, Director of Nokia’s Devices R&D said:

Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging. Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices. By joining the Wireless Power Consortium, Nokia continues to support the open standards approach that aims to meet these consumer expectations. Wireless Power Consortium is the first serious effort by the leading companies to harmonize the wireless charging technologies.

Do you charge any of your gadgets wirelessly?

  • T-Mobile to Offer Nokia 2330

After announcing the coming of the Nokia 6350 the other day, T-Mobile adds another Nokia phone to its roster with the Nokia 2330. The Nokia 2330 will be paired with T-Mobile plans, presumably cheap ones.

The Nokia 2330 is not a new handset in the market. It came out in 2008 and boasts of features such as a VGA camera, dual-band and a 32 MB internal memory. The Nokia 2330 is set to be offered to customers in the coming weeks but pricing has yet to be announced. Just to give you an idea, the Nokia 2330 carries a MSRP of €50 in Europe.

  • After whizzing through the FCC last July, it was only a matter of time before the NAM version of E71’s successor made an appearance stateside.  Amazon is now offering the Nokia E72 on a preorder and if you have been waiting for the device to pop up online, you can go ahead and order it for $469.  There is still no word on the actual release date or if there is a benevolent carrier ready to pick it up, but with triband 850/1900/2100MHz 3G network support, which is the frequency AT&T’s 3G operates at, we wouldn’t be surprised if AT&T announced the device in the coming days.  Other features of the E72 include a QWERTY keypad, a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, WiFi, GPS, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Nokia 6350 is a low-end phone that features a 2 megapixel camera, web browser, email capabilities and 3G connectivity. • Samsung S5510

Samsung unveils its own folding mobile phone, sporting a look similar to that of Nokia’s 6600 Fold. But as we all know, Samsung has been known to make folding phones one of their niche trademarks. The Samsung S5510 comes with a flat mirror surface and a hidden screen to kick off this Samsung clamshell phone.

Among the features of the Samsung S5510 include a 2.1” screen QVGA 240×320 pixels. It can display up to 16 million colors TFT and comes with the usual Bluetooth connectivity, USB connection and 30MB internal memory. It also accommodates microSD cards up to 8GB. Other highlights include a FM radio, MP3 player, WAP, and a built-in 3.2 megapixel camera without auto focus.

  • So what’s Nokia’s Maemo 5 all about? The N900 Rover is not out so we can’t know for sure what the new mobile OS will have to offer. But as with most of today’s gadgets, facts have been leaked about Maemo 5 so here’s a brief description of what looks to be a pretty interesting alternative to Nokia’s other OS, the Symbian.

Maemo 5 will remind you of webOS since it uses a card-like view of what’s happening with your phone. The OS will support both GSM and VoIP calls and all those calls will be neatly logged which means you’ll be able to quickly call back your friends using your VoIP program of choice. When it comes to messaging capabilities, you can expect threaded SMS support but there’s no MMS availability. AT&T will certainly enjoy this feature or better said lack of it. As you can see the OS can still be improved as other issues have been spotted too. There’s no Google Calendar sync option, the mobile browser is slow and Flash support, although there, isn’t great. The Rover will slow down if you run too many apps so better shut a few of them down while you aren’t using them. The Map app will make you want to get Ovi Maps and the music player is limited in features.

There you have it folks, a hands-off sneak preview of Maemo 5. But we definitely expect you to tell us exactly how the phone performs for you in case you do decide to get an N900.

A new connector is coming to your future cell phones and mobile devices and its solely purpose is to connect said device to HDTVs and display. The Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group will conceive it soon as various companies have already agreed upon such a bold endeavor. Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony and Silicon Image will work together to create the new standard. The question is, do we really need a new standard in our lives? After all we already have so many and with Apple’s and Intel’s Light Peak universal connector that’s coming in a couple of years there isn’t much point for devising an HD-only standard. What are your thoughts on the matter?

    Nokia Acquires Dopplr

Nokia has added a new mobile device to its roster with the reported acquisition of the Dopplr. Among the highlights of this deal include the Dopplr Oy, a private handheld mobile device provider suited for international travelers. Now, Nokia can be able to create Internet-based communities and other solutions using the world wide web.

The acquisition does not change the current Dopplr service which is available at Dopplr.com and on platforms where Dopplr is integrated.

Nokia Mural is an interesting clamshell phone which was initially announced for AT&T only to be pulled off the shelves later on. Apparently the Mural had some issues with AT&T’s 3G network and couldn’t connect to it. But fear not Mura fans (if there are any), AT&T has fixed the issue and the Mural is back on the streets. The phone still costs $50 with a new 2-year contract but it won’t surprise anyone if you decide to ignore it and get something else for just a few extra bucks. Or do you actually happen to love this particular Finnish creation?
