Hydrogen-Powered Phone Prototype

angstrom_phone.JPG

Last month, we reported on the Angstrom Power and Motorola partnership on finding a way to use micro hydrogen as fuel cells for lithium-ion battery replacement. The fuel cells which promised longer battery life were tested on Motorola Slvr L7 phones. Recently, however, Angstrom Powers and Motorola introduced a cell phone prototype powered by hydrogen. A desktop fueling station produces hydrogen from water and stores the particles in a metal hydride storage. These hydrogen molecules will pass through a fuel cell membrane which strips off the electrons to power the phone. Since the hydrogen molecules are procured from water, then finding fuel for the phone is as easy as finding the nearest tap.

    Motorola%20W181a.jpg

The last of the three new handsets presented by Motorola is the Motorola W181 Cell Phone. It’s another basic handphone like the Motorola W161, except this time, the unit boasts a 128×128 colored screen display. Measuring 110 x 45 x 15 mm, it also features Motorola’s CrystalTalk technlogy which ensures clear audio despite noisy surroundings. Other features include a one-key access to SMS, built-in FM radio, various applications, and 7 different African languages as well as Hinglish (Hindi + English) menu translations. The Motorola W181 will be released this Q1 ‘08 and prices will vary depending on your region. We reckon it would be an affordable model, but a bit more pricey than the black and white Motorola W161.

  • Motorola MOTO Z6w

    MOTO%20Z6w1.jpg

In spite of their announcement that they’re thinking of selling their cell phone unit, Motorola has unveiled three new handsets in this year’s Mobile World Congress. The first one is the Motorola MOTO Z6w, a device focused on mobile connectivity. The MOTO Z6w is both GSM and WLAN compatible, which widens the coverage for wireless coverage. The device has the ability shit between one connection to the next without interruption even if you’re in the middle of a phone call. The Motorola MOTO Z6w has a 2-megapixel camera and is capable of capturing 14 fps. It plays music using Windows Media Player 11, features a high-speed USB connection, Bluetooth connectivity, MPEG-4 video playback, and microSD card slot for up to 4GB cards. This slider uses Motorola’s EasyPair technology, which makes synching with other devices a cinch. The Motorola’s EasyPair will be available starting Q2 2008 in molten gray color as you see on the picture.

  • Goodbye Moto? Say it Ain’t So!

Okay, I was overreacting. Motorola isn’t really shutting down, they’re just considering spinning off their mobile phone unit due to the recent slump in figures caused by their lackluster performance after the phenomenal success of the RAZR. Still, a bit more into the slump and they might as well say sayonara. Strangely, right after they announced their plans to sell their mobile phone unit, the company’s stocks soared. I guess you should announce something like this every other day, Moto.

angstrom.JPG If you’ve ever gotten cut off in the middle of an important phone call or if your batteries have ever died without you having the option to recharge anytime soon, Micro Hydrogen MIGHT be the answer to your problems. Angstrom Powers has been working with Motorola to develop a new and viable fuel cell technology. As more and more people rely on mobile gadgetry, mobile phone companies are compelled to find a way to answer consumer demands, one of which is longer battery life. The Micro Hydrogen, a concept by Angstrom Power, is a combination of many factors including a refillable hydrogen storage tank, fuel cell architecture and micro-fluidics. Angstrom has been testing the prototype on Motorola Slvr L7 phones. The technology can reportedly double the usual talk time and full recharge the battery within ten minutes. Question is, will this technology actually come to the consumer market and if so, will it be able to replace the widely-used lithium ion batteries? Hydrogen seems a bit risky, but we know there’s more to the technology than what Angstrom and Motorola are letting out. Guess we’ll just have to sit it out and wait.

Motorola is certainly making some noise at the CES this time, with its new Z10 slider phone. This slick slider dubbed a “complete, pocket-sized, mobile film studio,” can record high-quality video at 30 frames with its 3.2-megapixel cam, lets users edit those captured clips, create transitions between scenes, and even add a soundtrack or commentary. After all this is done, this video can be uploaded directly to media-sharing websites like YouTube, Google Videos, ShoZu, and Yahoo! The crystal-clear 2.2-inch QVGA screen can display videos at 30 frames per second with 16 million colors.

On the still imaging side, Motorola has not let us down with a dedicated camera button, smart autofocus, and a Superfast burst mode, which can capture up to three images per second. These images, as with the videos, can either be saved or be directly posted to media-sharing websites of choice by the user.

This 3.5G quad-band device supports HSDPA at 3.6Mbps, GPRS, and EDGE, and Bluetooth but there’s no word about integrated WiFi. It runs off Symbian UIQ and can play AMR, AAC AAC+, MP3, WMA, 3GPP, H.263, H.264, and MP4. With support for up to an incredible 32GB via microSD, this device is essentially future proof as far as expansion goes.

The Motorola Z10 is great device if you are an aspiring director and will start shipping out in first quarter of 2008.

  • moto.jpgHere’s some surprising news. Motorola, after a year of troubles, has announced that its chief executive Ed Zander will step down next year, January 1st. After the “sharp decline” of the business, the company is finding ways, whether through personnel or innovations, to try and stem the tide. After heading the company for some time, Zander will be replaced by president and chief operating officer Greg Brown.

Zander however will not be totally out of the picture as he will remain chairman until the company’s shareholders meeting in May 2008.

Statements from Zander reports that he planned this move and this is what he wanted to do. A decision he made and not something that was made for him.
