For the people who love to play in the motorcycle niche, you can do so with the availability of the new 2XL Supercross for the iPhone. Very few developers have pushed out games for the iPhone that are AAA titles, but even fewer developers have produced AAA iPhone titles their first time around.

2XL happens to be one of them and it’s no surprise that Supercross is one of the best selling titles for the iPhone and iPod Touch. They’ve managed to translate their console and PC experience that dates back to 1994 over to the iPhone platform without overdoing it like others have, and just keeping things simple.

There are two things to look forward to come this June. One is the expected return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs who has since been on forced leave due to his health. The other is the expected announcement of a new iPhone being hyped as the “iPhone Touch HD”.

With the burgeoning success of the iPhone, iPod, and Mac, Apple is beginning to do what Microsoft has been trying for a decade to do: Create a common software platform that transcends devices. This is one of the most important trends for Apple’s long-term growth prospects.

With two huge announcements and critical things expected to come out this June, Apple is expected to continue its hold on the market and likewise formalize its entry into the netbook market.

T-Mobile seems happy to announce that it has sold over one million G1 Android phones in the USA so far. That’s quite an achievement considering that the phone has been launched by a carrier who’s 3G network is still young. As a matter of fact the G1 is the most popular 3G phone sold by T-Mobile so far considering that from the 1.5 million 3G handsets active on T-Mobile’s network over a million are represented by HTC’s G1. Considering that T-Mobile is going to expand the current 3G network and that the carrier is planning more Android phones for 2009, are we to expect more and more subscribers to switch to an Android-powered T-Mobile handset? And let’s not forget that this year the competition is going to unveil some serious smartphones: Sprint will bring the Pre, AT&T the next-gen iPhone and Verizon the Storm 2 and not only. What about you? Have you purchased your first Android phone yet?

Apple seems to be slipping a bit as far as screening the apps they make available at the app store. Today, Apple issued a public apology for the highly controversial iPhone app, Baby Shaker. The application, which appeared in Apple’s App Store on Monday and cost US99 cents ($A1.40) to download, allowed a user to violently shake an iPhone screen to make a baby stop crying.

After enough shakes, the hand-drawn baby displayed on the screen stopped wailing and a large red “X” appeared over each eye.

“This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store,” Apple said in a statement on Thursday.

“When we learned of this mistake, the app was removed immediately,” it said. “We sincerely apologise for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention.”

Apple’s apology came one day after The Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, a New York-based group which seeks to prevent brain injuries from Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), strongly condemned the “Baby Shaker” application, which was submitted by an outside developer called Sikalosoft.

  • Have you ever wondered what would happen once the human race would suddenly grow extinct? Well the thought has crossed our minds for sure and while we may not see what the world would be without human beings, there is a new iPhone application that can perhaps show us how the world would look if and when that time comes.

HISTORY today launched its first iPhone and iPod Touch application, the Life After People Photo Ager, which helps to answer that question. The free application is available for download at Apple’s iTunes store and allows users to “age” images by adding cracks, holes, mold, dirt, vines, plants and even stray animals and rusty bicycles to photos that can be saved for later and shared with friends.

The Life After People Photo Ager is simple to use. Photos can be imported from the user’s own photo library, or users can take their own new photos to “age.” Also part of the application is a “Location Explorer” that lets users page through a unique photo gallery of famous locations – all accompanied by historical descriptions – and then slide a finger along a scroll bar to visually progress its aging process in order to see what it would look like after people. Customizable postcards allow users to share an aged photo, along with a personalized message, with friends.

At the moment, the ongoing negotiations between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have expired and there is nothing definite on what to expect. And if there is a victim that will be caught in between these developments, it would be Apple’s widely popular iPhone.

Talks between the two sides turned for the worse as the telecom giant, which earned $12.8 billion in profits last year, threatened major cuts to employee health care. The union balked at the new contract proposal and is now mobilizing its 90,000+ strong workforce for a strike. If a workers strike hampers or shuts down service it will effect all iPhone users.

Apple has an exclusive arrangement with AT&T who serves as the only service provider for the iPhone. If a strike comes to fruition iPhone service could be severely degraded. If the strike lasts for an extended period it could steer many customers to other telecoms.

Trapped by their exclusive contract Apple could watch the strike derail iPhone sales as customers coming off contract turn to other services and, by default, other mobile phones.

iPhone owners who love to follow comics and manga on the iPhone can now look forward to something new. The latest in the comic world is the availability of Vampire Hunter D by Hideyuki Kikuchi and Saiko Takaki from Digital Manga Publishing.

With the new iPhone coming shortly, it’s no wonder that everyone is trying to get an application accepted in the App Store. Hulu is one of them. Its new application will be ready in a few months and it will be streaming content to your iPhone via 3G or WiFi, whichever is available. Will AT&T allow the app or will it try to veto it just like it wants to do with the SlingPlayer application? Users should be really excited to watch TV with any of these two applications while they’re on the go. The only thing to do now is to wait to see if Apple is going to approve Hulu or the SlingPlayer.

Catchy news isn’t it? Normally, an iPhone is hard to get at a great price but apparently seems to have a change of heart. Now before you start getting into a frenzy, there are some things you have to consider and this includes the impending release of the next generation iPhone. With that in mind, do consider that these phones offered at crazy discounted prices come from old inventory that AT&T wants to clean out.

Recently, AT&T and Apple started selling iPhones without a service contract for a $400 premium. Given the recent high profile problems at the SXWSi trade show and complaints from the media, apparently the two companies feel there is a market for iPhone users willing to pay a premium to not have their world delivered by AT&T.

Apple is coming out with a new generation of the iPhone, and wants to clean out the existing inventory. Typically, when a handset model is about to be replaced, the price drops significantly. Sometimes, the buyer even gets paid to take the phone (with a contract). It is interesting that rather than discounting the handset, AT&T and Apple think they can clear out inventory at a premium by losing AT&T. In a bad economy, this speaks volumes about AT&T’s perceived value.

Presently, AT&T has the exclusive right to sell iPhones in the United States. But its exclusivity will eventually end. AT&T should be using its exclusivity period to build customer loyalty and ensure that they keep customers once they have the choice of carrier. Best case scenario for AT&T would be happy customers that would want to stay with AT&T even if it did not have the iPhone. However, it would probably be good enough if customers thought that AT&T was an important part of the the iPhone experience that they will stay with AT&T when they upgrade their iPhone. If customers are not loyal to AT&T, it risks a serious price war on the cost of the handset and monthly service on newer versions of the iPhone.

Right now, it seems clear that customer loyalty lies with Apple. AT&T has announced upgrades and investments in its network that will become available later in 2009. Only Apple and AT&T know when the exclusivity period ends. So perhaps, AT&T will clean up its act before the end of that period.
