Digital photo frames and iPhone accessories have been simultaneously gaining ground as far as demand and popularity is concerned and now it seems that these two devices can be rolled into one with the Appstand. With the Appstand, you can now turn your iPhone into a classy digital photo frame. The Appstand seems to take the innovation brought about by docking stations only that you can dock, recharge and then showcase images while your iPhone or iPod is idle. The Appstand costs only $20 to own.

TomTom iPhone app to get an update

TomTom has recently updated their iPhone app, and has made some welcome changes.

They have finally added text-to-speech (which is usually a staple amongst GPS devices) as well as graphic lane guidance (the feature that gives the user a display of highway intersections). There is also a help menu that offers a shortcut to emergency numbers and directions to the nearest emergency services. The update also includes a free map update and even a safety camera database update. Yes, the user will be able to receive a warning when approaching speed limit cams.

According to my source, this update is pending approval. It will be free for those who already have the TomTom app, but it will cost everybody else about $99.

Sky Mobile TV iPhone app

Sky Mobile TV recently made splash as they have given users the option for integrating with the XBox 360 dashboard. Now, just like everything else, they are going to the iPhone.

This app is for free, but live streaming access to the full selection of Sky news and sports, including ESPN, will cost about $10 a month. However, O2 is offering a full quarter of a year’s worth of free access. It’s nice, really.

Universal is planning to feature iPhone interactivity on some of its newest releases which include Bruno, Public Enemies, 9, and Inglourious Basterds“.

Universal is also going to offer exclusive content for iPhone users, something that is akin to the BD-Live program. Of course, that does give iPhone users a little bit of an unfair advantage, doesn’t it?

Is the iPhone a Misfit?

Verizon has taken the first jab at the iPhone calling it a misfit. Well technically that is as it unveiled its new commercial to jack up the Holiday season promotions for its Motorola Droid phones. Making use of the “Misfits Toys” from the classic Christmas animation Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer, Verizon has added the iPhone to the list of misfits to leverage some publicity. Will Apple throw a second jab? Wait and see! Here is the commercial:

It was just a matter of time before a virus would finally make its way to iPhones and apparently first reports of it have now been revealed. Called “Ikee” the said virus changes the iPhone’s background to the picture of 1980’s singer Rick Astley. And it doesn’t stop there. Apparently it looks for other iPhones where the device is networked and spreads its dirty work. It makes use of the pre-installed SSH which is perceived to be unintentionally activated in jailbroken phones. Infection seems to be confined to Australia at the moment, though there are unconfirmed reports of Ikee in Thailand and Japan. There has been no word yet on how to remedy this Ikee virus though it has not been categorized as destructive for now.

Well, it seems that Apple is continuing the leap from selling the iPhone at just their own stores and AT&T locations to selling the device at a plethora of retailers.

The latest retailer to secure the iPhone for their inventory is RadioShack The Shack which will have the iPhone 3G and 3GS at Dallas-Forth Worth and New York City stores towards the end of this month.

So, if you want to pick up Apple’s flagship handset you now have another location to do so at.

Cry Translator iPhone app

As a parent of three children, I suppose I would have loved to have the Cry Translator during my kids’ infant years. This Cry Translator iPhone app is somehow able to interpret a baby’s cry to determine whether he or she is hungry, sleepy, stressed, annoyed, or bored.

Apparently, this works because baby crying is essentially a universal language. Believe it or not, the makers of this app say it is 96 percent accurate. If you want to test that out for yourself, go to the website and spend $30 on it. If you purchase it by November 11th, you can get it for $9.99.

I am amazed at all the new uses for augmented reality, especially those that make their appearances on iPhone apps such as Layar. There is now another augreal app with the Car Finder. (By the way, augreal is just an abbreviation that I just made up for Augmented Reality. I’m hoping it will catch on.)

Car Finder relies on an iPhone 3GS camera and digital compass in order to “overlay the direction of your car and how far away it is”. So now you have a way of remembering where you park. It is available at the App Store for about $0.99.
