It looks like Seth The Blogger Guy is probably the only blogger that’s not angry with AT&T for some reason. In this 3-minute video he explains why AT&T’s network is not as speedy as its customers want it to be and he’s saying that AT&T is working around the clock to offer a better, faster network in the future. Well then maybe AT&T should consider changing some of their ads, to reflect the real potential of their current network and not tell everyone how AT&T’s network is really fast.

One more important thing this short video confirms is the availability of MMS messaging on the iPhone. AT&T has been working for months to prepare “the radio access controllers in our network to support this launch.”

So what have we learned so far? Well AT&T is certainly not the best network out there but the future might look a lot better. Let’s see what happens when AT&T looses that iPhone exclusivity! Will people move to other carriers? Such a thing will definitely improve the quality of AT&T’s data transfer speeds…

  • Loopt for iPhones Approved

It looks like a new application is coming to the iPhones with Loopt. Loopt acts as a GPS-like app which runs simultaneously on the Apple iPhone with permission from the actual owner of the device. The Loopt app is designed to pinpoint the iPhone owner’s exact location through other compatible services.

The Loopt app was permitted by AT&T which would now require subscribers to pay a monthly fee of $3.99 for the new feature. There is a free 14 day trial for subscribers to try it out. The coming of this app can be useful for parents who often worry about their children when they are out on their own. It may also be a good tracker for erring husbands or wives, provided of course they approve it when they are being tracked!

Once again AT&T does as it pleases when it comes to handling its own business. We’ve seen some strange decisions in the past and now we have one more such decision for you. It looks like the carrier doesn’t feel ready to launch that BlackBerry Bold software upgrade. And after all this waiting it looks like a “software issue affecting the interaction between the device and network enhancements being deployed.” Aha! Right! That surely sounds like a serious problem which needs to be addressed immediately. So anyway, what phone are you going to choose to replace your BlackBerry Bold?

AT&T has finally decided to announce MMS support for the iPhone. Starting with September 25 everyone that owns an iPhone and wants to start sending pictures to their friends and family will be able to do so. All you will need to do is get the software update that’s coming and you’ll be ready for MMS messages in no time. Way to deal with this whole MMS issue AT&T! And it came so fast! Let’s see what’s going to happen with that iPhone MMS-related trial now!

Sure, it’s not as cool as Nokia’s recently announced N97 mini, but it looks like a RAZR and that’s cool enough for me. Anyways, what you see above is the Nokia Mural which was recently announced to be coming to AT&T on September 6th for $49.99 after rebate and a 2-year contract.

This phone will feature a 2.2-inch screen, 3G, external music buttons, 2mp camera, IM and email clients, and a microSDHC slot.

The best feature of all? The fact that you can customize the phone’s lighting, woo!

This was bound to happen sooner or later but we’re glad it happened now. AT&T will offer free access to its WiFi hotspots network to all Windows Mobile phones owners. That means you’ll be able to walk in a Starbucks coffee shop with a Windows Phone in your hand and check your mail or browse the Internet while you offer yourself a tasty treat.

AT&T has announced that September 14 is going to be the day when all Windows Mobile phone owners will be able to start enjoying those hotspots. The only thing AT&T asks of you is that you get an unlimited data plan or other qualifying data plan in order to take advantage of that free hotspots.

Besides Windows Mobile phones, iPhones and BlackBerry handsets already have access to AT&T’s hotspot network. Who’s going to be next?

A few days ago we heard that that hot Nokia N900 Internet Tablet will be compatible with AT&T but sadly, we have to inform you that such a thing will not happen. Here’s what Nokia had to officially say about 850/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA compatibility:

Regarding the Nokia N900, we have announced a tri-band WCDMA version that utilizes the 900/1700/2100 MHz networks. There have been no announcements regarding a version that supports the 850/1900/2100MHz bands.

You can keep hoping that Nokia will launch a 850/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA but just in case it doesn’t you should consider changing carriers if you really want that N900.

  • The iPhone has been capable of MMS messages ever since iPhone OS 3.0 was released however, American consumers on AT&T have not be able to utilize the feature.

One such consumer from Ohio, Deborah Carr, has decided to take Apple to court over the matter. Her case states that Apple had previously said “MMS support form AT&T will be available in late summer” despite the summer being nearly over, this means Apple has until September 22nd to introduce MMS. Below is a excerpt from Carr’s filing:

“Millions of customers, as a result of the false and deceptive representations and concealments of Apple and AT&T purchased the 3G and 3GS, waiting for the wonderful day in June 2009 when the new application would be available which would allow MMS.”

So, loyal readers, do you think Carr has a chance at taking a bite out of the Apple?

    Taking Sides: Google vs Apple

Google’s Google Voice is currently a very big deal in the mobile business. Apple has rejected it from the App Store and the FCC has started to ask questions about the ban. We have already shown you what Apple, AT&T and Google have responded to the FCC and we feel like we have to remind you that nobody seems to be guilty for what happened to the app. And now we came accros the video above which does a quick recap of the whole debacle. This goes to show that everyone noticed this Google vs Apple (and AT&T) scandal and I have a feeling we’re going to see more of it soon. Will the FCC offer a solution to the whole problem or will Google find a smart way to give iPhone users access to its Google Voice? What’s your opinion? Who’s side are you going to take? Would you use Google Voice on your iPhone if available right away? Or do you agree with Apple?

  • We can’t say we’re surprised to see that someone else is suing Apple over iPhone issues. This time the matter in question is the lack of MMS support or better said AT&T’s approach to this new iPhone functionality. Deborah Carr is the name of the disgruntled consumer that filed a lawsuit in Ohio against Apple and AT&T for “violating laws against deceptive trade practices and with breach of contract.”

And it looks like MMS support is very dear to this particular customer. Deborah Carr wants $5 million from Apple. What do you think happens next? Will Apple settle the trial and pay? Or will we see AT&T finally allow iPhone owners to send and receive as many MMS messages as they choose to?

In Apple’s and AT&T’s defense, MMS is supposed to be available in late summer so we have about a month left to see what happens.

  • The FCC seems to be on a roll lately! After its inquiry regarding the Google Voice business, the FCC is going to start another investigation. And this one sounds pretty bold too. The FCC is going to launch a formal inquiry into the wireless business. The main U.S. carriers will be scrutinized. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless should be ready to give all the answers the FCC is looking for. What will the consumers have to gain from all this? Well the FCC will certainly look into exclusivity deals and various ways in which competition affects consumers so we’re really interested in the conclusions of this upcoming investigation.

Just like we said earlier on today, Sony was indeed getting ready to launch the new Reader Daily Edition. So let’s see what this reader is all about! You can expect a 7-inch touchscreen and AT&T 3G modem to help you with your reading. The Reader Daily Edition will be available in December for just $400 but 3G access will be free. Sony has partnered up with the New York Public Library for the launch of the Reader but you’ll get plenty of content from a lot of other sources too. So what do you say? Are you more inclined to pick up a Reader Daily Edition than a Kindle?

  • After we’ve seen yesterday that AT&T is not at fault for the rejection of Google Voice from the App Store and that the app is, in fact, not rejected but under a long review, it’s now Google’s turn to respond. And I don’t want to spoil it all for you but Google is also not at fault for the rejection of Google Voice. Did I say rejection? I meant review of course. At the rate we’re going it looks like nobody is to blame here so the only entity left here to question is the FCC. Maybe the FCC should also respond to itself clearing its name regarding the Google Voice ban. I meant to say, of course, review instead of ban!

Unfortunately we can’t see the conversations Google had with AT&T and Apple. Those would have been really interesting to read and therefore they have been redacted…

If you’re willing to give it a try, follow the link to read why Google’s Google Voice is a good application for humanity and shouldn’t be in any way thrown out of the App Store world. And by thrown out, I do honestly mean reviewed for a much-longer-than-necessary time.

Coming soon, at least one can hope, the FCC ruling in this matter!

  • If you didn’t know, the Qik iPhone 3GS application has been available for some time now and lets you view and upload videos taken with your phone to a number of different places. Another feature found in the software is the ability to stream content that your friends have uploaded. However, that feature was previously only available over WiFi.

Today, however, the app has been updated, unlocking the ability to stream video using nothing more than a 3G connection. We’ll have to see how AT&T takes to this one.

Here comes Apple’s response for the FCC regarding Google Voice. And it looks like Apple has not rejected the application just yet as it is still reviewing it before allowing customers to access it. Why is Apple reviewing it? Well it looks like Google Voice has two major issues. And these are:

    1. [Google Voice] appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail.

    2. The iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways. These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time.

Well it took Apple and AT&T three weeks to answer so we’re really looking forward to see what FCC and Google have to say about this. What if Google will alter that user interface to resemble more to Apple’s interface? Will the app still be banned under review?

If it makes you feel any better, plenty of other apps have also been banned and you’ll find the complete response by following the link below.

By now you should be familiar with the whole scandal. Apple banned Google’s Google Voice application from the App Store and the FCC decided to get involved to find out why that has happened. And AT&T, blamed by others of being the muscle behind Apple’s decision, has issued a response email to the FCC. And it looks like AT&T “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” How many of you expected that folks? Now that AT&T is in the clear, we’re waiting for Apple to think outside the box on this one. And let’s see what the FCC will have to respond to this response.

Your favorite carrier, AT&T, has decided to start making some changes regarding its smartphone division. It looks like the carrier will force users to get a data plan with each smartphone. The new measure will apply to everyone getting a new smartphone after September 6 which means that everyone else is safe for now. In case you will buy unlocked handsets the change will not apply to you but then again, not so many people choose to pay the full price for a smartphone, do they?

And AT&T is saying that it’s going to apply the new policy in order to make sure that customers receive a predicable bill each month. Here’s an internal AT&T email talking about the change:

Beginning September 6, 2009, customers who activate or upgrade to a Smartphone will need to sign up for an appropriate data plan. Existing Smartphone customers active prior to September 6, 2009 will be grandfathered and exempt from the new policy.

Why we are making this change?
We want our customers to have the best possible experience with their Smartphones. A predictable bill is a key factor in customer satisfaction, so effective September 6, 2009 Smartphone customers will need to subscribe to a data plan, as the vast majority of customers already do. Data plans let customers fully utilize their device, without the worry of bill shock.

How we will ensure an extraordinary customer experience?
The sales representative is the customer’s expert resource in helping select the right device for their needs. When a customer does not want a data plan, we will position other devices in our industry leading portfolio for the customer to choose from, as many devices do not require a data plan.

    Action Required:
Sales Managers will review the Know the Facts, Job Aid, and FAQs (found under Related Links) with their sales teams and ensure all sales representatives fully understand the new policy and how to position the Smartphone data requirement to customers. A Sales Coaching Session will be available on September 5, 2009 (document to be distributed in advance).

What do you think? What carrier will be the next to apply similar measures?

  • Yesterday, it was made known that the Garmin-Asus nuvifone M20 was made available for purchase in Taiwan with no solid word on a worldwide launch. However, if recent reports are to be believed the two devices may be making their way onto the US carrier AT&T at some point in the future.

News comes to us from Pocket-lint who was on hand at the M20 Taiwanese launch and have quoted a Garmin-Asus rep to have said “the M20 is destined for AT&T in the U.S.”.

Unfortunately, that’s all the info we were given but I think it’s safe to say we will definitely see the device drop on AT&T in the coming months.

AT&T has announced that they have added their new 850MHz spectrum today. The spectrum is a new 3G band for better high-speed service.

“We know many of our customers depend on wireless as their primary communications connection to work, family and friends, and our mission is to ensure that every time a customer hits the ’send’ key, whatever the application,” said Keith Holmes, AT&T’s vice president and general manager. “We’re enhancing our network every day to help customers do more with and get more from their wireless connections.”

Atlanta is the first city to be seeing the new service, while AT&T plans to release the service to different markets throughout the year.

  • AT&T branded Touch Pro2 spotted

What you see above is the first ever live shot of an AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro2. We already knew that it would be hitting T-Mobile and Verizon but had no official word of an AT&T version, luckily said picture has given us proof.

There’s no word as to when this device will actually hit AT&T but our sources tell us that it could potentially be called the AT&T Tilt 2 once it is released for the carrier. We’ll keep you posted as more news regarding this device emerges.
