Care for some blackjack? I am not talking to the gambler in you but to the cell phone owner. Blackjack III is the name of Samsung i788. I guess that unlike some other people that started naming their phones Curve, Pearl, Bold and Thunder, Samsung decided to simply use the same Blackjack code name and only to add numbers following it. Apple and AT&T are doing their best to prevent iPhone exploitation by opportunists that wouldn’t mind trying to resell unlocked handsets for use in other networks. And don’t be surprised that happens. The iPhone gets more and more popularity so lots of people are trying to make a buck off it.

To tether = verb, to get myself some internet connection from my cool 3G (i)Phone to my PC, whenever I feel like surfing the web from my cool laptop.
I am glad we all know what that means. How many of you guys and gals have done it? Getting some online action on your personal computer via your smartphone? There’s nothing illegal right there. After all you are the one paying for the data plan, any eventual surcharges and for the electricity your devices use. And you purchased the iPhone mainly because it’s cool and popular, not necessarily because it’s a better handset.

I while back ago we told you how T-Mobile was all pissed off at AT&T for stealing their Starbucks sweetheart. And T-Mobile was all going to sue all mighty AT&T (and Starbucks) for a breach of contract or something like that. I imagined they might just have what lawyers call a case and make quite a profit in damages.

Tell me you didn’t see this coming. Sprint has prepared entirely new plans for their Samsung Instinct release. That was bound to happen once Apple announced they will sell the 3G iPhone for $199 and $299 with AT&T 2 year plans.
The Samsung Instinct was initially priced at $449.99, which is a more than fair price for what it has to offer. Sprint just sliced off $150 for a 2 year plan and a added a further $100 mail in rebate. And on top of that, Sprint will also be offering the for the full price to all customers who don’t want to get burdened with another 2 year plan. Is it cool or what.
I’d assume that if the Instinct had the same continuous and aggressive campaign the iPhone had, they would have a better fighting chance. About two weeks ago, when Spring presented the Instinct saying it was much better than the iPhone, I was arguing that although it seems better than the iPhone, it probably won’t match the 3G iPhone. But since the iPhone brought us only 3G and GPS, which is far less than the most of were expecting, I tend to rethink my Instinct vs iPhone comparison.

You simply got to love those unsatisfied employees. Without them there wouldn’t be any leaks what so ever. No pictures, no exclusive news, no nothing. Almost a day since Apple announced official 3G iPhone prices and AT&T, my favorite US carrier when it comes to reporting news, has started internal preparation for the 3G iPhone.
Besides the prices for the two iPhone versions, which we already knew since yesterday, we have more juicy details in the leaked memo.
Any new iPhone will have to be activated in store, with a maximum cap of three devices per person. All 3G iPhone customers will have to sign up for a new data plan, whether personal ($30/month) or Entreprise ($45/month), and a qualifying voice plans. The 2G plans will stand in place for “old” iPhones until further notice. Prepaid and Pick Your Plan will not be allowed on the 3G device. And cancellation period is now extended to 30 days instead of the previous 14.

For the past month we’ve been up and down the hill of free WiFi availability in Starbucks locations. At first the offer was presented for iPhone users only. Then they canceled it. Then they renewed it again for everyone. They are AT&T and they are making their best to be on top of the mobile business in the USA.
It appears T-Mobile will not sit and watch all this Starbucks WiFi thing without wanting a piece of that action. That is they want the piece back to their own back yard. Apparently T-Mobile doesn’t appreciate the way Starbucks switched to AT&T and they will be suing these coffee makers for quite a sum.

It seems that our friendly neighborhood carrier, AT&T doesn’t miss a thing while preparing for iPhone2. They have worked on the menu of their site, they must have finished the plans and asking prices, they have almost finished their full HSPA network in more than 250 markets. All these actions might make you think they are ready to deal with one of the bestsellers in cell phone business, the iPhone.

Just like the name suggests, Pantech Breeze sure is equipped to be the perfect phone for the first time mobile users, although I doubt there are many of that breed. Being a product of AT&T and Pantech’s collaborative toils, the Breeze has a large display, oversized buttons for easy typing, and a trio of quick call buttons for those frequently called numbers. The menus are also simplified and uncomplicated thanks to the incorporated “Breeze menu” which prioritizes features that are accessed the most by the user. The Breeze can also serve as the perfect companion for the elderly and disabled with its audio cues and tactile clicks when the oversized buttons are pressed and offers up to 3 hours of talktime and 10 hours of standby on a single charge. Underneath all this, the Breeze is a mid-range device with a camera (unspecified), Bluetooth, and other functional utilities such as an alarm clock, notepad, calculator, and a calendar.
If you know someone who you think could benefit from such a device, head over to an AT&T store near you and fork over $124.99 on AT&T’s Pay As You Go plan after a $30 mail-in rebate.

Verizon has won a $678.5 million contract over 10 years for their services of data and voice security service and disaster communications system for the Homeland Security. Wow that was a long phrase. AT&T came in second for the same thing and will receive a second place consolation prize worth $292 million.

No, but by the end of June they will!
Our friendly neighborhood carrier AT&T is working hard to finish upgrading their 3G network so it will be ready as we like it when the 3G iPhone strikes next month. From what they say they are working hard and fast to deploy their HSUPA support to enhance uploads and bring them up to 500-800kbps. As for HSDPA that’s already there in most of their markets with download speeds peaking at 1.4mbps.

Ok I admit it. WhAT&T is a word I made up! But did you guess who I was talking about?
If you have that deja vu feeling about all this free AT&T WiFi in more than 17,000, you should know this is a different one. AT&T will offer free WiFi for anyone who buys their Laptop Connect deals. From a leaked internal memo, the word has spread that starting May 20th anyone with a Laptop Connect plan of $60 or higher will be able to roam freely in selected locations.
This move is going to extend to smartphones later this year as well as to the iPhone. Or won’t it?

Well at a first glance this seems like a good idea if it’s real. Am I to expect a representative to tell us tomorrow how this all was just a rumor?
From what people are saying, AT&T will offer insurance for any kind of device you buy from them The insurance will cover all devices, smartphones included, but is yet to be confirmed. (more…)

Sprint is in a hurry to set up their Xohm networks in these two American cities. Baltimore and Washington DC are going to be taken into the 4G era by the end of 2008.

Following the official release of the BlackBerry Bold, we were left wondering about the prices and future plans. Well here they are.
AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless are going to sell the Bold for $300, with only T-Mobile announcing a price $50 higher. I wonder why T-Mobile stands out of the crowd like that. What do they have prepared for their subscribers? If you remember, T-Mobile is comfortably ranked 4th in the USA by number of subscribers. (more…)

Left and right in this mobile and cell phones business, whenever I turn my eyes these days I find iPhone this, iPhone that or AT&T iPhone this and that.
Hopefully June 11th will bring an end to it, although I highly doubt it. For now AT&T came up with a back up plan. If you were one of those people standing in line in an Apple store in New York City waiting for an iPhone that never came; if you were one of those UK customers that found themselves in a dangerous iPhone shortage; if you won’t be one of those lucky 3G iPhone owners; if you are on a budget but still want this toy; well (lot’s of ifs here) you are going to AT&T! Ok. let’s not get crazy here people! Let’s not get excited about an AT&T announcement or rumor only to find out later it was just a human error.
AT&T has 3G in the labs working at a speed of 7.2 megabits per second which is about double the theoretical achievable speed on current networks. By 2009 they want to deliver an amazing 20 megabits per second. That would be really cool and really fast. But is it doable?
