I know it must all sound familiar too you but AT&T is working on its 3G network in order to make it ready for the new iPhone coming this June. Sounds like 2008 all over again. The same maker is getting ready to release the next generation phone for the same carrier. And the carrier is working on its network in order to make it better.

The new Apple will support faster HSDPA as far as rumors go and AT&T has confirmed that it is working on software upgrades meant to boost 3G downlink speeds to 7.2Mbps. Will everything working okay this time? Are we to expect the same familiar AT&T network issues we’ve seen until now? Are we going to have a more stable connection? What do you think?

  • At the moment, the ongoing negotiations between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have expired and there is nothing definite on what to expect. And if there is a victim that will be caught in between these developments, it would be Apple’s widely popular iPhone.

Talks between the two sides turned for the worse as the telecom giant, which earned $12.8 billion in profits last year, threatened major cuts to employee health care. The union balked at the new contract proposal and is now mobilizing its 90,000+ strong workforce for a strike. If a workers strike hampers or shuts down service it will effect all iPhone users.

Apple has an exclusive arrangement with AT&T who serves as the only service provider for the iPhone. If a strike comes to fruition iPhone service could be severely degraded. If the strike lasts for an extended period it could steer many customers to other telecoms.

Trapped by their exclusive contract Apple could watch the strike derail iPhone sales as customers coming off contract turn to other services and, by default, other mobile phones.

  • The iPhone isn’t officially arriving to Verizon but I guess we were all expecting that. AT&T is the exclusive carrier and that won’t change in the near future. Verizon is also saying that Apple wasn’t going to work with Verizon anyway. At least not until Verizon will release its 4G LTE network in 2011.

Here’s what the Wall Street Journal says:

Mr. Seidenberg also addressed the notion of Apple Inc.’s iPhone ever coming to the Verizon Wireless network, saying it is more likely that Apple would be willing to work with the carrier under the fourth-generation, or 4G, network, which follows the same technology standard as AT&T Inc.’s 4G plans. He said Apple never seriously considered making a CDMA version of the iPhone because it didn’t have as wide a distribution opportunity.

With the new iPhone coming shortly, it’s no wonder that everyone is trying to get an application accepted in the App Store. Hulu is one of them. Its new application will be ready in a few months and it will be streaming content to your iPhone via 3G or WiFi, whichever is available. Will AT&T allow the app or will it try to veto it just like it wants to do with the SlingPlayer application? Users should be really excited to watch TV with any of these two applications while they’re on the go. The only thing to do now is to wait to see if Apple is going to approve Hulu or the SlingPlayer.

Catchy news isn’t it? Normally, an iPhone is hard to get at a great price but apparently seems to have a change of heart. Now before you start getting into a frenzy, there are some things you have to consider and this includes the impending release of the next generation iPhone. With that in mind, do consider that these phones offered at crazy discounted prices come from old inventory that AT&T wants to clean out.

Recently, AT&T and Apple started selling iPhones without a service contract for a $400 premium. Given the recent high profile problems at the SXWSi trade show and complaints from the media, apparently the two companies feel there is a market for iPhone users willing to pay a premium to not have their world delivered by AT&T.

Apple is coming out with a new generation of the iPhone, and wants to clean out the existing inventory. Typically, when a handset model is about to be replaced, the price drops significantly. Sometimes, the buyer even gets paid to take the phone (with a contract). It is interesting that rather than discounting the handset, AT&T and Apple think they can clear out inventory at a premium by losing AT&T. In a bad economy, this speaks volumes about AT&T’s perceived value.

Presently, AT&T has the exclusive right to sell iPhones in the United States. But its exclusivity will eventually end. AT&T should be using its exclusivity period to build customer loyalty and ensure that they keep customers once they have the choice of carrier. Best case scenario for AT&T would be happy customers that would want to stay with AT&T even if it did not have the iPhone. However, it would probably be good enough if customers thought that AT&T was an important part of the the iPhone experience that they will stay with AT&T when they upgrade their iPhone. If customers are not loyal to AT&T, it risks a serious price war on the cost of the handset and monthly service on newer versions of the iPhone.

Right now, it seems clear that customer loyalty lies with Apple. AT&T has announced upgrades and investments in its network that will become available later in 2009. Only Apple and AT&T know when the exclusivity period ends. So perhaps, AT&T will clean up its act before the end of that period.

  • The boycott of everything Cuban has been going on for a very, very long time. Well, now that Fidel Castro has been replaced and Barack Obama has assumed the position of President, the times are changing.

It was recently announced that Barack Obama is now allowing United States telecom, television, and radio companies can now apply for licenses to be allowed to operate in Cuba.

Hopefully with this new market opened up the United States economy will slowly start to get better. Let’s just hope that Cuban Cigars are allowed Stateside sometime soon.

  • It’s been a long wait but whether it was worth it or not is for the interested AT&T subscribers to decide as they now have a new non-smartphone touchscreen cell phone to choose, the LG Xenon, which has now joined AT&T’s ranks now as promised.  The Xenon, as we already know, should be an ideal match for anybody who’s into big-time texting (like that poor girl who just couldn’t stop) and email as it comes with a slide-out QWERTY keypad for easy thumb typing.  There’s support for quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA (850MHz/2100MHz) networks along with WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and USB 2.0 adding up to nice set of connectivity options.  Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, a 2.8-inch LCD display, and support for microSD up to 16GB (100MB onboard).

Look up AT&T to get the LG Xenon for $99 after a $50 rebate on a two-year contract.

AT&T tried to change it’s terms of service and add new rules regarding video streaming and p2p activity but it looks like the company is not really going to enforce those bans on video streaming and p2p activities. In fact it has decided to apologize and retract the new terms of service. Here’s what they had to say:

The language added on March 30 to AT&T’s wireless data service Terms and Conditions was done in error. It was brought to our attention and we have since removed it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Another AT&T human error then! Will the new rules be added in the future?

Cellphones marketed towards teens continue to flow out of AT&T and next up is the LG Neon.

Featuring a touchscreen, slide out QWERTY keyboard, and 2.0MP camera the Neon is sure to make any techsavvy teenager happy. The press release also states that you’ll be able to “access Instant Messaging, Mobile Email, AT&T Music, and the mobile Internet.”

    Samsung’s not so smart Magnet

Now just because this phone has a full QWERTY keyboard, don’t expect it to be able to do things like the Propel Pro or iPhone; this phone is strictly marketed towards teens who need a full keyboard for text messaging.

Anyways, what you see above is the Samsung Magnet. Details are scarce but the press release says that it will have a WAP enabled browser, integrated camera, all bundled in a “sleek package”.

Check back in the next few weeks as more information regarding the Samsung Magnet creeps out.

While we had recently gotten word that the Samsung Propel Pro would hit AT&T March 19th, new announcements confirm that it will instead ship in April for about $150.

The Propel Pro sports a design not common to the current handset market, it has a slideout QWERTY keyboard along with a small joystick used as a pointing device. This compares with things like the Blackberry’s trackball, you get the idea.

Other than that, the Propel Pro will feature a 2.55-inch screen (no touch, sorry), GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, and EDGE. Coupled with Windows Mobile 6.1, a 528 MHz processor, a 3MP camera, and a battery for talk time up to 6.5 hours, the Propel Pro is sure to spurr at least some interest.

Verizon Wireless is going to start selling netbooks soon. And to be more precise, Verizon will sell 3G-enabled netbooks by the end of the second quarter. For now we have no idea what netbooks are going to arrive from Verizon but we should assume that plenty of netbook makers out there will be interested in selling their netbooks under Verizon’s name. AT&T is already selling $99 Acer netbooks so we should assume similar prices to arrive from Verizon.

  • Apple is ready to get rid of its current iPhone stock and it will take all the necessary steps to do so. That’s why it has started to sell the iPhone 3G without a contract, just as we heard that AT&T intends to do. The 8GB model will sell for $599 while the 16GB version will sell for $699, just like we told you. The only difference is that you won’t have to get an AT&T contract with it. That means you will be able to activate it under your favorite carrier without having to unlock it first.

  • Bold Comes Free from AT&T

The BlackBerry Bold is available for free from AT&T. All you need to do is to get one that’s refurbished and a new 2-year contract. The phone was available before for $299.99 if new and $199.99 if refurbished. The new deal will help you save a few bucks but it will still tie you to AT&T for a couple of years. The deal is available for online purchases and after today you might not be able to get it. So hurry and act on it if it sounds interesting enough to you. On the other hand, the BlackBerry 9630 Niagara is on the way so you might be better off waiting for the new smartphone to arrive.
