Call it whatever you want, recession, economic crisis but it still affects people. Almost everyone is suffering except for Apple. The Cupertino-based company has posted its fiscal Q4 2009 earnings report and the numbers are quite impressive. Apple has brought in $1.67 billion in net profit and $9.87 billion in revenue.

Last year Apple only managed to bring in $1.14 billion in profit but in fiscal Q4 2009 the gross margin went up all the way to 36.6%.

46% of the quarter’s revenue comes from international sales while Mac sales went up 17% compared to last year. Apple sold 8% less iPods, probably because so many people already own one, while iPhone sales went up 7% compared to last year for a total of 7.4 million units.

Apple has also stated that it has a “new lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.” Anyone ready to guess what 2010 will bring?

As far as luxury items are concerned such as expensive jewelry and lockets, not everyone has the cash to spare to buy them for themselves. However, Monica Rich Kosann provides us with the next best thing; an iPhone app that gives iPhone owners a virtual version with the MRK e-locket app. With this app, users can simply use the MRK e-locket lamp to insert pictures or engrave custom messages at the back of the lockets and send them to whomever they wish. Pepsi Co. has issues an apology for its iPhone app, the ‘AMP Up Before You Score’ which categorizes women into 24 types and then makes use of the iPhone’s Internet feature to link users to information about them and what they like. Pepsi AMP is the latest energy drink by Pepsi and apparently the iPhone app is part of their marketing campaign. Types of women listed in the application include punk rocker, bookworm, aspiring actress, artist, and sorority girl.

And while Pepsi intended to come out with a harmless app for fun, the same could not be said for the people who got offended by this type of an app. The apology has been made but the damage has been done. In the end, this instance will hurt Pepsi’s brand image building for AMP rather than boost it up. It back to the old drawing board for Pepsi I guess!

NBA Live 2010 Coming to the iPhone

EA Sports has brought the NBA Live 2010 to the iPhone together with a couple of other marquee games under its wing. Aside from the NBA Live 2010 for the iPhone, it has also announced the availability of Need for Speed Shift and Surviving High School and it looks like a lot of iPhone and iPod Touch owners are going to want these gaming apps on their Apple device as EA acknowledges the phenomena brought about mobile gaming demands.

The NBA Live 2010 for the iPhone will feature all 30 NBA teams and can be played on a full regular season mode and the playoffs. Though the Dynasty mode and Slam Dunk competition will not be included, you just have to be realistic. Just be thankful that NBA Live 2010 is available for the iPhone and the fact that you are still using a mobile version and not really the game console where it was really mean to be played. Ditto with the Need for Speed Shift and Surviving High School!

Knowledge is key and getting information from various modes of references is indeed important. However, considering that the Internet provides a lot of potential alternatives that will not even cost you a dime, this is one app for the iPhone which has good intent but sadly, a ridiculous way of sharing information. The app is called a high end graphic calculator but being sold for $50 is something that may lead to its downfall. It’s practically an almanac, a currency converter and stock analysis tool for you iPhone and even comes with features that are not available at its official site. But seriously, who in his right mind would throw away $50 for this kind of app?

People need apps for their iPhones. But at $49.99 that is a bit too steep and seems like the developers did not consider consumer preference when they priced this app!

    HiPhone F320 with Dial-Wheel

There are plenty of iPhone clones on the market, but the most famous one is certainly the HiPhone due to its unusual light colors and system. Anyhow, as you can see by the image the new HiPhone F320 has a dial-wheel instead of a click-wheel like the Nano, but its just for style because the numerical keys work via push-button.

On top of the awkward design, the iPhone F320 has a 2.6-inch touchscreen, a 1.3-megapixel camera, makes use of the quadband GSM system, can playback MP3 or MP4 files, and also has FM and bluetooth. Sadly there is no information about the price of this iPhone clone disaster.

Here is an app you don’t see everyday. The app was made in time for Boss’ Day which will be celebrated on October 16. The Boss Day Cards app for the iPhone is practically the same as most e-cards we use these days, showing respect to our superiors (assuming you love your boss of course) in a techie kind of way. This app aims to strengthen the ties of the boss-employee relationship, something that many would seem bumpy in the office setting. Perhaps it can be a great app as well to get on his good side. Regardless of what your intent is, you can bet that your boss will be totally moved by the e-card, a practice that may spark a new trend in the working environment.

You can download the app over at the iTunes App Store for only $2.99.

  • Well, what do you know, it looks like those iPhones and iPods out there come with an integrated FM radio after all. Rumors are saying that Apple is going to launch a Radio application soon which will wake up that dormant integrated FM tuner. Don’t get all too excited since only the new iPhone and iPod touch models will be able to play radio tunes for you. If you have an old-gen handset or iPod then you’d better get a new unit in order to enjoy FM radio.

The new application will work well with iTunes which means you will be able to purchase the songs you’ve just listened to on the radio with a simple click. We don’t have any precise details about the future app and there’s a chance that we won’t even see it anytime soon. But we’ll be back with more when Apple decides to come clean with everything!

If the word on the street is correct then iPhone 3GS jailbreakers might have a very dear problem on their hands. Apple is making new iPhone 3GS phones which come with a totally new bootrom. iBoot 359.3.2 will make the iPhone impossible to jailbreak right about now. The new iPhone 3G phones have already been shipped and more will come. The iPhone Dev Team has admitted that the new bootrom is going to prevent them from jailbreaking the new handsets but that doesn’t mean they will give up. In fact, I’m pretty sure that, although Apple might have won this battle, the war is far from over.
