  • Acer is finally ready to send the first Android netbook your way. The Aspire One D250 is available for Pre-order on Amazon and it will cost you $349 to get it. The netbook will offer you both Android and Windows XP under the hood so you’ll be able to choose which OS is better suited for your needs. Don’t hurry up to get it just yet as Acer is bound to unveil another version of the D250 capable of running Windows 7. The Windows 7 version will be announced at some point next week in Japan after Microsoft will finally launch its latest OS. It would be very interesting to see a netbook coming with both Windows 7 and Android on board but that might not happen anytime soon.

  • The last we heard, the Acer A1 was set for a release this month and while don’t see the device on the shelves yet, it is at least available for preorder now from Expansys Germany, a good sign.  The device, as we already knew, comes with Android but specs sheet up on the retailer’s site reveals that the A1 will come with Android 2.0 (Donut) preloaded and a 768MHz processor, which is no Snapdragon but faster than the rest of the Android smartphones out as of now.  Expansys has it priced at $571, but that should change when it is picked up a carrier in the near future.

Don’t look so surprised by that number! Windows Mobile 6.5 is coming and it looks like there are quite a few phone makers ready to roll phone capable or running Microsoft’s newest OS. And while we’re definitely thrilled to see that concept tablet, the Courier already, we can’t say we’re similarly interested in Windows Mobile 6.5. The OS is clearly a transition platform from the old Windows Mobile 6 to the future Windows Mobile 7.

Nonetheless manufacturers out there are ready to launch Windows Mobile 6.5 phones! Those 30 new handsets capable of running Microsoft latest OS will be made by HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Acer, Toshiba and HP. The phones will be released by the end of the year and we know a few carriers are definitely interested: AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMo, Softbank Mobile, SKT, Telestra and Telus.

Will you buy a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone?

Here’s one more WM6.5 device pegged for a release this Oct 6th.  The ultrapowerful Acer F1 will be making its debut on the same day as many other Windows phones, but it remains to be seen if its 1GHz Snapdragon CPU coupled with a 3.8-inch 480×800 touchscreen display, 5-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA support will set it a notch above the others.  And all that goodness at just $480 may sound too good to be true, but it’s true, says PocketPCThoughts.  So did we help in driving the $1010 X2 out of your mind already?

Some recent rumors point to a September release of new Acer smartphones. It looks like the company is ready to release a bunch of phones come this fall. The A1, C1/E1, F1 and L1. We’ve been waiting for Acer to make up its mind and announce at least a couple of the handsets mentioned above. The A1 for example will be an Android-powered smartphone while the F1 will be a Windows Mobile phone powered by that Snapdragon platform from Qualcomm. We’ll be waiting for Acer to confirm the rumors and offer us more details about these hot phones.

  • Rumor has it Acer is planning a 3D laptop. According to Campbell Kan, VP of Acer’s mobile computing business unit, the 15.6-inch Aspire 3D notebook should arrive at the end of October 2009 and necessitate stereoscopic glasses in order for the 3D effect to be captured.

Initial applications for the visual technology will include 3D gaming and movies, and Acer will preinstall software that, it claims, is able to take 2D footage and convert it into 3D. The hardware has been collectively developed with Wistron, although beyond that Acer have given no indication as to whether it will use NVIDIA’s system.

That means you will be able to choose between Android or Windows every time you turn it on. Is anyone looking forward to Android laptops? Will you buy such a machine?

    Acer Aspire One 571

The Acer Aspire One 571 netbook advances the resolution of its 10.1-inch display to 1280 x 720, plus an optical disc drive. However, unlike the ASUS Eee PC 1004DN, this is no DVD burner but a Vmedia drive which uses 32mm Blu-ray discs, loaded inside small plastic cartridges, each with 1GB capacity.

Initially only ROM discs full of media content will be available, with 576p-quality video content, but the company anticipates recordable versions in the future. To handle that media, the Aspire One 571 couples its Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor with the Quartics Q1721 Multimedia Coprocessor. Look for Bluetooth and WiFi in there too. There’s no word on pricing or whether consumers will endorse Vmedia.

  • A US release is still a dream until the holidays hopefully, but Acer is already giving out gifts to the rest of the world.  While both the DX900 and X960 are not superfast as the Acer F1, they sure look equipped to take on other Windows smartphone devices in the market.  We have already given you the scoop on what’s under the hood, but for those tuning in late, the Acer DX900 has is a WinMo-powered, dual-SIM smartphone with triband HSDPA/quad-band EDGE support, a 2.8 inch VGA display, a 3mpx cam, WiFi, and GPS.  The X960 on the other hand lacks dual-SIM capability but packs all that the DX900 has to offer and goes a step further with HSUPA support and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Both the devices are available now across Europe and Asia.

So will we be seeing some Android devices too pretty soon? Let’s hope so.

  • Aww, that’s too bad.  If Acer’s Android phones are anything like the Asus P565 that came back to life recently (which they should be with the uberfast 1GHz Snapdragon CPUs), we will definitely be missing a lot of firepower this year.  No reason has been mentioned by Acer for the delay, but the company has reportedly hit some snags with US carriers pushing the likely release date to 2010.  Still, a passing remark from Mr. Aymar de Lencquesaing, head of Acer Smartphone Division, gives us a glimmer of hope that we will could see some of that Acer sweetphones in time for the holiday season.

Update: Looks like Acer is going to release some cellphones this year after all.  An email from Acer PR to Gearlog has cleared up the whole situation and we should be seeing some Acer smartphones Stateside just in time to woo the holiday shoppers this Christmas.
