BlackBerry Curve 8520 Cell Phone Review–A Different Kind of Blackberry

I’m often quick to chastise Blackberry cell phones for a lot of reasons, but today I have one less to have a problem with.  The folks out at Puremobile sent over a Blackberry Curve 8520 for me to try, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Blackberry Curve 8520 is a smartphone that offers mobile web and mobile email, a two megapixel camera that handles both still and video images, a USB port, the capability to both sync and edit with most of the Microsoft Office suite, a full QWERTY keyboard, calendar, MP3 player, speakerphone, voice dialing, voice recorder, and a battery capable of generating fully four hours of talk time on a single charge.

My usual complaint with the Blackberry is two-fold.  One, the scroll pad is EXTREMELY sensitive and will often move a lot farther than you want it to, and two, seemingly ubiquitous apps like games and an FM radio are missing outright.  While the Blackberry Curve 8520 has both the super-sensitive touch scroll pad and a missing radio, it DOES, however, offer games.  Apparently someone at Blackberry FINALLY caught on that, hey, even big fancy executives get stuck in traffic or at somebody’s waiting room and just MIGHT like the opportunity to do a little Sudoku or something, and it just doesn’t look professional to pack a DS everywhere you go.

So I’m actually very pleasantly surprised by the Blackberry Curve 8520, and should you decide to go this route, I think you might be too.

The Good

Finally, someone included games.

Plenty of powerful business tools too

The Bad

Ultra-sensitive controls

What, no radio?

Score: 8 / 10
