The folks out at Wirefly sent me a Blackberry Bold 9000 to try, folks, and I’m pretty happy they did because this is one of the better Blackberry systems that I’ve tried.

The Blackberry Bold 9000 is a candy bar style smartphone with a gig of onboard memory, mobile email, mobile web, a variety of games (playing Texas Hold ‘Em on a Blackberry is pretty awesome, and I’m abundantly glad to see Blackberry include a few on their models, which was something I was constantly complaining about here!), a variety of AT&T specific features,  a two megapixel camera with still and video recording, a GPS receiver, a digital audio player that supports several different varieties, headset jack, USB port, and a battery that offers four and a half hours of talk time on a single charge.

I liked this phone, and that’s not something I can say outright very often.  There weren’t too many things wrong with this (I’m always a little torqued when there’s no FM radio, but there’s an MP3 player instead and that’s good enough), and plenty to like.  I especially liked the textured back on the Blackberry Bold–it improved the grip substantially.  And either I’m getting used to it or Blackberry’s FINALLY listing to me about the trackball’s sensitivity, because this one felt a bit less responsive than normal, finally allowing me to scroll a lot more easily than previous incarnations would have allowed.

The Blackberry Bold 9000 is a significant improvement over earlier versions, and one I have little trouble recommending.
