AT&T Refining EDGE Network in Anticipation of iPhone Launch
According to various online sources, AT&T is busy performing last-minute refinements on its EDGE network, and have been doing so for almost six weeks. Changes have been being made without announcements and hype, and have mainly been aimed at improving the network's throughput, latency, and coverage. In other words, AT&T is prepping for a huge influx of new AT&T subscribers with a hankering to get their hands on the all-new, multimedia-intenstive Apple iPhone.
Apparently AT&T has been adding additional T-1 connections to their poorest performing towers, in the hope that they can boost the current 40kbps rate to the new minimum of 80kbps. Internally, AT&T is refering to the project as "Fine Edge", and is schedule to continue work on the EDGE system until June 15th.
Let's hope the launch goes off without any problems on the network, otherwise, that could spurn an unusually high demand for unlocked iPhones that consumers can take elsewhere.
