App Store reaches 3 billion downloads

Apple has today sent out a press release that lets us know over 3 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store since it was launched less than 18 months ago.

In the words of Apple CEO Steve Jobs:

“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

But what’s the real reason that Apple is letting us know this? Because Google is expected to announce their own phone today, of course.
