Alltel isn’t happy with their current Rev. A network and they have just announced they will be upgrade it in the following months. 18 new markets will be added to their current count in the next 6 months. We’ve seen how AT&T went all full HSPA in all their markets so Alltel’s efforts to expand their high speed network come right in time.
Little Rock, Charlotte, New Orleans, Phoenix, Tampa are just a few of those new markets, with Alltel saying that both rural and urban areas will be covered.
What about speed you ask? Well Rev. A networks will offer upload speeds of average 500-800Kbps and up to a maximum of 1.8Mbps while download speed will vary from 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps with maximum going to 3.1Mbps. The numbers are good and this should only be good news to Alltel subscribers. But in order to take advantage of higher speeds you will need better and better devices and mobile phones. Some of the most recommended are the Huawei EC228 USB and the UTStarcom UM 150 laptop cards and as for phones the HTC smartphones should really benefit from this high speed network upgrade. As for further EVDO network expansion Alltel will go from 76% of covered customers to 82% by the end of 2008. Check back with them to see if you’re going to get upgraded!
