It was only yesterday that I showed you how small a 5 megapixels camera from Sharp could be. That’s a camera that will be inserted into lots of mobile devices.

Here’s what we have today from OmniVision: an 8 megapixels camera, the OmniBSITM. This smart chip design will definitely be part of the future of the cell phones. What this chip does is to use a technology called backside illumination which enables it to allow more light to reach every pixel. That leads to the usage of a small 1.4-micron pixel and that leads to 8 megapixels cameras to be inserted into cell phones, laptops, webcams and more.

Somewhere in June OmniVision will be able to ship these new cameras and we’ll be ready for new handsets to incorporate them. No word on price yet.
