If I was a cell phone manufacturer I would spend a great deal of my free time thinking about how I could efficiently enter the Chinese market. With 592 million people owning a cell phone, China might just be one of the most profitable markets out there. That means at least another 592 million Chinese, but probably more, do not own a cell phone yet.
It appears that in the first five months of the year, almost 45 million people bought a cell phone. In the same period, the fixed line carriers dropped to 358 million users after loosing 6.5 million subscribers. That’s all according to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
No wonder manufacturers of all sorts of phones would like a piece of the action. In these first five months, $48 billion have been reported as revenue, showing a 9.6% increase from last year. Investments in telecommunications have also rose a 2.7% compared to last year to a total of $11 million. I would assume the money needed to repair damaged networks and equipment after this year’s horrible earthquake are also counted here.
If all this are official reports, think about how much money should be involved into the cell phones knock off business. After all we all know that in China even good knock off products get knocked off.
