iPhone to reach 42Mbps on 3G by ChristmasBy Dax at 05/24/2008 |
We expect a lot from the 3G iPhone, but isn’t this a bit too much? Not to the Australia-based Telstra, it isn’t. A senior executive of the mobile carrier was caught claiming that the 3G iPhone will be capable of speeds up to an unbelievable 42Mbps, all in time for this Christmas no less. Well, yeah, may be in time for Christmas 4 or 5 years down the lane, but not this time. Here’s why:
- The maximum speed on the Telstra networks is 14.4Mbps. Short of a miracle, the people over at Telstra will not be able to double or triple that speed by Xmas time.
- Infineon S-Gold3, the chip rumored to be used in production of the 3G iPhone, limits itself at 7.2Mbps.
So, there’s no way the 3G iPhone will be able to deliver that much in so little time. And if by chance, the iPhone is able to do this, it would be the first cell phone to do so, down under or anywhere else. Wish I could get half that speed on my PC connection though…
